Job summary

The Biodiversity Scientist - Data and Analytics plays a crucial role in a global conservation organization, focusing on understanding and demonstrating biodiversity outcomes through data science and monitoring. This position involves synthesizing various data streams into coherent frameworks for conservation planning and decision-making.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent advanced degree in biodiversity science or a related field, with 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Proven expertise in biodiversity science, integrating diverse data types such as field observations and advanced sensing data into monitoring frameworks.
  • Strong background in quantitative data analysis, ecological modeling, and statistical methods for biodiversity assessment.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific work into practical guidance for non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience in building collaborative relationships across organizational and geographic boundaries.
  • Curiosity about evolving biodiversity technologies, including AI-assisted analysis.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and co-create biodiversity monitoring frameworks with regional scientists.
  • Curate and integrate biodiversity datasets to support analytical needs.
  • Provide training and capacity-building support to regional and field teams.
  • Manage complex projects and budgets, including grant applications.
  • Collaborate with philanthropy teams for communication and fundraising efforts.

Skills

  • Proficiency in R, Python, or other data science platforms.
  • Experience with Bayesian statistics, machine learning, and spatial/remote sensing skills.
  • Strong data management and reproducible science practices.
  • Multi-language skills and cross-cultural experience are a plus.

Education

  • Advanced degree in biodiversity science or related field.

Tools

  • Familiarity with emerging biodiversity monitoring technologies such as eDNA, acoustic monitoring, and camera trap analysis.
