About the role

Job summary

This full-time programmer role focuses on implementing the Pangea-USEtoxGeo model to evaluate the environmental and human health impacts of chemicals on a global scale. The position is part of a collaborative project aimed at enhancing understanding of chemical impacts on ecosystems and human health.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in programming, data science, applied mathematics, computational methods, environmental or health informatics, or a related scientific field.
  • Experience in Python coding, particularly with scientific libraries (Numpy, Scipy) and graph data structures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and independent algorithmic thinking, with or without AI tools.
  • Familiarity with numerical methods for solving partial differential equations in three dimensions.
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and mass balance relations, or a willingness to learn.
  • Optional experience with GIS in Python, databases, web development, and environmental modeling.
  • Strong scientific skills, project management abilities, and effective communication in English.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and implement the USEtoxGEO modeling framework.
  • Integrate Environmental Process Models into USEtoxGeo, linking them to spatial datasets of soil, air, and watersheds.
  • Program solutions for large sparse differential equation systems to predict concentration increases in modeling cells.
  • Connect resulting concentrations to human and ecosystem exposures and effects.
  • Develop geospatial interfaces for user input, grid creation, and result interpretation.
  • Test the model using various emission datasets, including pesticides and organic pollutants.
  • Prepare documentation and publications detailing the model's development and findings.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Python and scientific computing libraries.
  • Experience with numerical methods and differential equations.
  • Knowledge of GIS and environmental modeling is a plus.

Education

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.

Tools

  • Python, Numpy, Scipy, GIS software, and relevant modeling frameworks.
